Best for smaller businesses, especially those who ship freight.

ShipRush shipping software is an affordable solution designed to make shipping efficient. ShipRush displays rates from multiple carriers on the same page in the admin, letting you quickly and easily choose the most cost-effective shipping carriers. What’s more, ShipRush offers support for many different types of shipping, including individual package and freight shipping, and the option of adding LTL Freight to your available carriers.

Pros

  • Generous 60-day free trial
  • Competitive pricing
  • Numerous integrations

Cons

  • Limited number of users
  • Live support limited to business days/hours

ShipRush Pricing

ShipRush’s pricing model is based on two versions of the software. The company is moving away from its desktop version, although it’s still available, with the price dependant on the number of users, what carrier you choose, and what software add-ons you select.

The more popular web version offers more straightforward pricing. Ranging from $29.95/month to $99.95/month, all plans allow three users, multiple carriers, and more than 95 integrations. At higher plan levels, you gain access to DHL eCommerce and LTL Freight as well as NetSuite and SQL web store. Adding LTL plans adds $100 to $250 per month, depending on the options you choose.

ShipRush Features

You can test out ShipRush for 60 days by signing up for a free trial. Once you sign up, you are presented with this dashboard.

Screengrap of ShipRush admin

The dashboard is a bit austere, but ShipRush quickly proves to be very functional. After an initial learning curve, users should be able to calculate shipping rates and print shipping labels and packing slips easily.

Here are a few other features that ShipRush users benefit from:

  • Discounted Shipping Rates With UPS, FedEx, and USPS
  • View Rates From Multiple Carriers On One Screen
  • Send Notifications To Customers When Orders Ship
  • Dropshipping Support

ShipRush integrates with almost 100 eCommerce platforms, marketplaces, shipping carriers, and accounting and CRM software apps. These integrations include Shopify, WooCommerce, eBay, Etsy, Drupal, 3dcart, Ecwid, BigCommerce, Big Cartel, Opencart, and many more.

When To Use ShipRush

Overall, ShipRush is great shipping software for many businesses. It’s affordable, functional, and reliable, and you can test it out for yourself using their free 60-day trial.

ShipRush has a lot of positives. One word of caution to merchants who maintain a large inventory (thousands of products): You may have a hard time with the software. Creating shipping rules for that many different types of products could be more effort than it’s worth.

6. Stamps.com

Best for small businesses that ship primarily via USPS and UPS.

Stamps.com is shipping software that works a bit differently than many other options. Instead of connecting to multiple different carriers, Stamps.com integrates with only two shipping carriers: USPS and UPS.

Essentially, Stamps.com is a simple shipping solution for merchants and individuals who primarily want to purchase and print postage from the USPS or UPS. Those who want more shipping options will not find this software well suited to their needs.

Pros

  • Easy to use
  • Discounted rates
  • Free trial includes free postage

Cons

  • Carrier options limited
  • Free trial period will be backcharged if you sign up for the service

Stamps.com Pricing

Stamps.com charges one flat rate for its software: $17.99/month.

When you sign up for this software, you are given a few perks. These include a free 4-week trial, a free 5 lb. digital scale (when you pay shipping and handling), $5 in USPS postage to use during your trial, $20 in coupons to use on postage after your trial, and a free supplies kit.

Keep in mind that if you continue using Stamps.com beyond those first four weeks, you will be charged for both your first “free” month with the service and the following month.

Stamps.com Features

Stamps.com is a very simple shipping solution, and it’s easy to set up and use. Take a look at the dashboard I tested during my trial:

Screengrab of Stamps.com dashboard

Order processing takes only a few clicks, and you can compare prices between different USPS and UPS services at a glance.

Here are a few of Stamps.com’s best features:

  • Discounted Shipping Rates on USPS Priority, First Class & International Shipments Plus UPS Two-Day & Air
  • Bulk Label Printing
  • Schedule USPS & UPS Pickups
  • Purchase Shipping Insurance
  • Send Shipping Notifications
  • Free Address Verification

While Stamps.com does not integrate with multiple shipping carriers, they do provide integrations with many popular eCommerce platforms and marketplaces. Your options include Shopify, BigCommerce, CS-Cart, Volusion, Magento, OsCommerce, Opencart, WooCommerce, 3dcart, and more.

When To Use Stamps.com

Stamps.com users like that the software is convenient and easy to learn. They also like the discounted rates that Stamps.com provides. However, reviews of Stamps.com are not all positive. Some users report frustrating billing practices, saying that it was difficult to get refunds on misprinted postage and ultimately difficult to cancel the service. Others say that Stamps.com is an unnecessary service as you can purchase postage directly from USPS.com without incurring a monthly fee.

As you consider Stamps.com, you’ll have to weigh the pros and cons. If you ultimately choose to use the software, you can be certain you’ll benefit from the convenience of the service. Check out What Is Stamps.com & How Does It Work to find out more.

How To Choose The Best Shipping Software

Once you’ve decided to incorporate a shipping software into your workflow, how do you know which is the best shipping software for small business? Here are a few pieces of advice you should keep in mind as you choose a shipping program for your business.

Check Available Integrations

It is crucial that the shipping software you use integrates well with your eCommerce platform and the marketplaces you sell on. These integrations ensure that when customers place an order on one of your sites, that order appears seamlessly in your shipping software. Make sure to check the integrations lists of each option you’re considering to see if your preferred platforms and marketplaces are there.

Consider Your Shipment Volume

Shipping software is worthless if it doesn’t accommodate the number of orders you ship each month. As you research each option, take a look at the pricing page to see how many shipments they allow at what pricing levels. You may find that one app offers plans for your shipment volume at a more affordable rate than the others.

Decide What Features You Need

Different shipping software apps come with different feature sets, and you should make sure the software you choose has the features your business needs.

While most shipping programs offer similar core features (the ability to purchase and print shipping labels, send email notifications to customers, and manage tracking numbers), some software comes with additional advanced feature sets that you can purchase as well. Some of these more advanced options are inventory management features, dropshipping features, and the ability to send freight shipments or LTL (less than truckload) freight shipments. Decide which features are absolute must-haves for your business, and look for a software that provides those features.

Check For Customer Support Options

Most shipping software offers a searchable knowledge base as well as live support via email, live chat, or phone. Look into the support options each platform provides, and decide what will best meet your anticipated needs.

Read Software Reviews

Before you purchase software, make sure you read plenty of reviews! Read a mix of reviews from software experts and real-life users to get a good feel of the pros and cons of each software. We recommend reading our full reviews of each software program, and also visiting the comments sections of review sites and the app marketplaces on your shopping cart platform.

Take Advantage Of Trials

Most software offers a 30-day free trial or a free plan. Take advantage of those options to test out the software for yourself. You’ll be surprised how much you can learn about an app in just a few short hours. The only cost is the time you invest in it.

If you’re tired of losing yourself in packing peanuts and misplaced notes-to-self, try out one or more of these software options. You’ll find that shipping is much less of a chore when order processing and fulfillment is automated, organized, and synchronized. With many solutions beginning at $25/month, shipping software is a small investment that could do a lot for your business. Check out the options above to get started with a free trial, or search our site for more quality shipping software reviews.

Good luck and happy shipping!

Kate, three of your competitors are actually all the same company. Stamps.com bought ShipStation and Shipping Easy years ago. (That’s why their prices are identical.)

It’s possible they own the other firms too – I haven’t kept up with all their acquisitions. Stamps.com also owns Endicia, ShipWorks, and in the UK they bought MetaPack. They’ve basically bought almost all of their competitors…

When I was talking to business account reps at USPS, the two providers they had good things to say about were XPS Ship and Shippo. They couldn’t praise XPS enough, and they passed along good endorsements of Shippo from other reps. They didn’t mention any of the Stamps.com brands. I’m not sure why you excluded XPS and Shippo from your review, since they seem to be fairly major players now. If they don’t pay referral commissions, you should mention that at the outset, if that’s why they’re excluded. The web is drowning in affiliate commission reviews at this point, and it would be good to see more journalism and high integrity, high effort reviews.

      Jessica Dinsmore

      Hi Joe,

Thanks for your feedback and expertise on shipping software! You are right–XPS does look like a company worth reviewing for sure. We’ve gone ahead and submitted your request to our editorial team for review, and we absolutely appreciate the suggestion.

Regarding Shippo–While we do have a review of Shippo, a decision was made to leave it out of this “Best” post due to some of the concerns mentioned within that review. It was not a financial decision–But if you would like to better understand how we make money, you ought to check out this post. You might be surprised–We work for you, our readers! Thanks again for posting, and if you have any other questions, let us know!

        Simon Wright

Impressive range of shipping software providers available in the USA by the looks of it and great article; very in-depth analyses. For Merchant Maverick’s UK-based retailers that are shipping regular high parcel volumes, Parcelhub (where I work) may be of interest.
