Overview:

Perkville Inc. is a SaaS (Software as a Service) company with a point-based loyalty platform.

Co-founders Sunil Saha (a former LinkedIn PM) and Eric Bollman (a former UX Director at Yahoo!) launched Perkville with a simple, but effective method. The software is free and requires no cards, no codes, and no apps. The only thing needed is the user’s email address, which Perkville merchants have full access to, even if they cancel their service. To date, Perkville has raised over 1.2 million dollars in funding from friends and investors, is used at over 2000 locations worldwide, and has over a million users. Since our last review, Perkville has tweaked a few of its features and improved integrations with companies like ABC Financial and Lightspeed to offer a more seamless experience.

Perkville’s loyalty program is easy to set up, integrates well with several POS systems, is customizable, and extends to social media outlets. Costs are manageable and maintenance is very low. Perkville data suggests very promising results for merchants and, matched with the right business, can be a great asset. Read on to see if Perkville is a good fit for your business.

Pricing:

Perkville offers two monthly subscription plans for fitness centers and a single plan for all other businesses. Transaction fees and limits have been removed from the program. You can schedule a demo prior to signing up.

Fitness Plan 2

  • more than 3,000 members per location

All Other Businesses

Cancellation Policy: Perkville subscriptions are month to month and free to cancel at any time. Cancel service by emailing cancel@perkville.com.

Web-based or Locally-Installed:

Web based.

Hardware and Software Requirements:

Perkville software can be run directly through many POS systems or through a tablet or PC.

Specific Size of Business and Type (Or Company Size):

Perkville works best for small to medium sized businesses and is most popular among gyms, fitness centers and small retailers. Depending on your POS system, there may be additional options for web and mobile integrations, but this program is generally not a good fit for merchants who deal in eCommerce only.

Ease of Use:

  • Setup. Check out Perkville’s promotional video for an overview of how the program works. Perkville makes setting up your account pretty easy. You’ll need to start by creating a Perkville login for your business. If you’re already using one of the POS systems listed, you’ll select the name from the list, fill out a handful of boxes for your rewards program, choose your subscription plan, and fill out your payment information. The settings for the rewards program can be changed at any time, and once you’ve finished the initial setup you can input additional options for referrals, emails, and social media. Perkville requires the login credentials for your POS in order to connect. If you don’t use one of the POS systems listed Perkville may still be able to create an integration, but even if that’s not possible, POS integration isn’t necessary for Perkville to work. Since the software is web-based, you can use it on a computer, kiosk or tablet as well.
  • Signing up Customers. In order to sign up customers, you’ll need to ask them for their email address. Customers will need to sign up on the Perkville website using the same email address in order to redeem points.
  • Interface. The admin side of Perkville is very clean and simple. The design incorporates tables with good sized fonts and soft colors. The settings are easy to find and the information is easy to read. On the customer side, the design is pretty simple. Perkville has a mini tutorial box for users with tips and pertinent information about how to use the program. Merchant boxes have a point tracker that shows customers how many points they have and how many they need to redeem a reward.
  • Reward Redemption. Customers can redeem rewards by printing out a voucher from the Perkville website. These vouchers will have a barcode that can be scanned or input into your system when the customer comes to your location. You’ll need to mark the voucher as used to prevent duplicate use. You can see how to do this here. Alternately, customers can redeem rewards directly at your location, and (depending on your POS and your rewards settings) there may be additional options for redemption as well, such as automatic redemption or redemption through a mobile device.

Customer Service and Technical Support:

  • Sales and Support. 866.510.5967. If you’re interested in using Perkville software, you can contact the sales department or schedule a demo. The ‘demo’ is actually a webinar that runs roughly 30 minutes long. For technical support, you can call or use any of the options below.
  • Email. If you have additional questions about Perkville before you sign up, you can email info@perkville.com. Support requests should be sent to support@perkville.com. Turnaround for emails is generally pretty good; responses range anywhere from 30 minutes to 24 hours. Perkville has staff members working all hours to accommodate global clientele.
  • Web. Perkville offers support for customers and merchants via the online support center. Article topics include POS Integrations, points and redemption, and FAQs. Perkville’s blog is also frequently updated with new features, integrations, and tips.
  • Demos and Tutorials. Perkville offers demos and tutorials to check out the software in action. The company has also posted a guide to help clients market their loyalty programs.

Negative Reviews and Complaints:

Perkville has no BBB presence, and negative reviews are scarce. Most of the issues listed in our previous review have been addressed. Still, no software is perfect.

  • Lacks Some Marketing Features. Perkville is really big on social media interactions, but not so big on email marketing. I’d like to see more email and targeted marketing features in future versions.
  • Industry-specific. Not necessarily a bad thing, but the software is designed for a very specific industry – fitness. Businesses within that industry will do well. Other businesses can still make it work, but it’s just not a good fit for everyone.
  • No Mobile App. The Perkville loyalty program can be found within the MindBody POS mobile apps, but Perkville does not offer its own mobile app. (Everything is done through the Perkville website.) Considering the amount of time most of us spend on our phones each day (studies suggest anywhere from 90 minutes to 10+ hours), a mobile app makes sense.

Positive Reviews and Testimonials:

Perkville reviews are generally positive, and the program has a lot of great things going for it. Here are some of the benefits of Perkville:

  • Positive ROI Data. The O2 Fitness Case Study reports an ROI of 2054% over a 12 month period in 12 locations. Kerry Joy Reinbold of The Funky Buddha Yoga Hothouse said this about Perkville:

“We love Perkville. We use them as a merchant at our yoga studio, The Funky Buddha Yoga Hothouse, and we’ve seen similar results to Charm City, as mentioned in the post. In addition to our rewards program, we currently are running a new student promotion and a win back promotion with Perkville and have had great success…”

Kevin Gregor wrote this about Perkville:

“…What’s been really great for us is the second in your list – generating new business. In just over 2 years of using them, we have just shy of 4,800 new customers that likely wouldn’t have otherwise come through our doors.”

  • Positive Customer Response. Perkville’s ease of use extends to the customer side, which is really important. There’s no card to keep up with, and no random serial number to remember. Couple that with a well thought-out loyalty program, and you’ve got a winner.

“I love PERKVILLE! And so do my favorite coffee and yoga places. It’s such a nice treat to get a free latte every so often. I particularly like how I don’t have to carry some rewards card or remember some arbitrary number to sign in…” – sue_kim3

“Thank you Perkville and Marty! Our gym in PA, MultiSport Fitness, started using Perkville in August with great success. As an owner and administrator it has become a very effective and easy (thanks to Marty) rewards program. As for our clients…the buzz is deafening…they can’t wait to redeem their free class voucher from Perkville…” – Jennifer Flatt Fleischer

“Hey Perkville gang, great job! We use it as our only rewards program at The Sandwich Spot in SF’s Marina District and our customers like it…” – Hank Minkey

“…We’ve been using this loyalty program at our fitness studio (Circuit Works LA) for almost a year now and couldn’t be happier with it- It’s super user friendly and our clients love it…” – Circuit Works

  • Seamless Integration. Merchants using Perkville have experienced hassle-free integration with their POS systems and social media outlets. A couple merchants who use the Mindbody POS had this to say about Perkville:

“We use Perkville as our rewards program for our students. It’s very easy for students to manage their accounts and redeem points for rewards that we set. Integration with MindBodyOnline is fantastic and allows students to automatically receive points for their activities. Features such as Facebook and Twitter integration are great for giving students even more points for sharing with their friends…” – YogaBrad

“Perkville has been great for us. We have been using them for about 2 years and the clients love it. It’s super easy to set up and requires no ongoing maintenance on our end. Clients automatically earn points, click redeem and the credit for whatever service or product automatically pops up in MB. Done. It’s a beautiful thing…” – Superman

Features:

  • Loyalty program. The Perkville loyalty program is a point-based program that allows you to customize how customers earn points based on specific actions. Your program is managed through your dashboard on the Perkville website. The program has several presets for earning, and points can be modified or deleted in each preset.
    • Earning Presets. In addition to these presets, you can add and edit your own earning perks and point values. The same applies for redeeming rewards. Presets include:
      • Facebook Posts
      • Tweets
      • Referrals
      • Joining
      • Customer Check In
      • Referrals
  • Location Specific Earning and Rewards. For merchants operating in multiple locations, earning perks and redeeming perks can be modified for each location.
  • Social Media. The Perkville program has the capability to reward your customers for Twitter follows, tweets, and Facebook posts. Photo rewards are now available as well. Customers are able to write a personalized message about your business which posts to their personal pages. These actions are managed through the Perkville website, and Perkville notifies you whenever a new message is posted.
  • Referrals. The Perkville program also allows you to reward your customers for referrals. Your customers can connect directly to Gmail, Y! Mail and Hotmail through the Perkville website. If you’ve elected to use referral rewards in your program, customers who log in to their Perkville account will be able to submit email addresses and a personalized message to their friends to refer your business. These points will be added to your customer’s account once their referred friend patronizes your business. In addition to rewarding customers, you can also include special offers for the referred friend as a promotion.
  • Time and Frequency Bonuses. Perkville has added a new feature that allows you to automate rewards for specific times or number of visits.
  • Point Notification Email. Your customers receive emails with point updates when they earn or redeem points at your location.
  • Data and Reports. With Perkville you can generate reports and export your customer email list at any time. Perkville will also send you daily reports on transactions and customer data.
  • Perkville Business Profile. Included in your subscription is a Perkville business profile which includes information about perks offered, your location and social media connections, your business website, and the fine print for your rewards program.

The Loyalty Test:

So, does Perkville…

Increase repeat business? Yes. Perkville case studies have shown pretty significant boosts in repeat business. The program is easy to implement, and the perk tracker on the customer end is a clever gamification tool that motivates more frequent business.

Generate new business?  Yes. Through referral and social media rewards, customers are able to share personalized messages about your business to their friends and associates. What this feature lacks is a guide for the types of information your customer could include in their message or an optional default message.

Give you a competitive edge? Yes. The program is intuitive and doesn’t require much from your customers. There’s no card to lose, no extra hardware to buy, and nothing to memorize. Perkville is easy on your staff and easy on your customers. Depending on your business, you can choose to have a check-in kiosk or monitor activity from the staff side only. The versatility of the program helps to make it unique to your business.

Final Verdict:

Perkville has carved out a niche in the fitness industry and created partnerships with POS systems geared towards gyms and wellness centers. This unique loyalty program has also been successful with small retailers and chains, salons, and restaurants. That being said, Perkville may not be a good fit for larger retail businesses with more complex POS systems or sales structures. Thus far,

Thus far, Perkville has been a steady contender in the loyalty sphere, so I can confidently recommend it to merchants with fitness-related businesses.

At Xercise4Less we’ve been using Perkville since late August 2014, we are very happy with the service provided. It has increased our retention, secondary spend and social media interaction as well as the most important things- customer loyalty and exercise adherence. I’d strongly recommend this platform to any business.

Perkville rocks and definitely passes our "loyalty tests" as well. We've been very pleased overall. What's been really great for us is the second in your list - generating new business. In just over 2 years of using them, we have just shy of 4,800 new customers that likely wouldn't have otherwise come through our doors.

We found Perkville to offer services that are illegal under the unethical business practice clause- intentionally interfering with vendor relationships & acting in bad faith. Case in Point- When a customer purchases an item from our store they are sent an email to register and redeem points using Perkville for our business. If it was that simple it would be great.. However- the reality is that Perkville will then send the customer an email and once they set up their account to acquire points from purchases at our store they are offered to get discounts and points toward shopping at one of our competitors store.. SO in essence they are taking our customers and trying to sell them on going to shop at another store that is similar to ours! (whether or not they have shopped there in the past or not they are offered an incentive to shop at our competitors store!) What kind of nonsense it that? This is the 2nd time we have had the issue we addressed it with Perkville the first time and thought it was fixed as they upgraded our account and gave us our own website so that only we showed up on the page however we found out it didnt stop them from trying to poach our customers by sending them to another store just like ours! SO we have basically sent our competitors our customers for almost 6 months.. Unbelievable.. I would stay AWAY from Perkville if you want to keep your customers.. they are doing you no service.. their clients are your customers not you the one paying the bill to use their system.. they are not going to watch out for your best interest as a business.. Their platform is ALL Wrong-Be Warned..

    Hi Lisa,

We apologize for any confusion. Perkville does not sell or share your customer list with other businesses. We also do not contact your customers to go to another business. We exist to drive loyalty and retention to your business.

A person that earns points at more than one business on Perville can see their points from those businesses in one dashboard for their convenience. We also offer a white label site where only your points show up in this scenario.

Perkville does have a referral feature where your customers can refer friends to your business using their own address book.

I hope this clears up any confusion but please feel free to reach out anytime at support@perkville.com.

    Cheers,

Nice write up Phylicia. I wanted to let you know that we offer per location unlimited transaction pricing starting at $49 per location depending on the type of business. So our solution is very affordable for chains 🙂
