PowerPay Review
JANUARY 6, 2016, UPDATE: PowerPay has been acquired by EVO Payments, and the PowerPay brand has been retired. Be sure to read our EVO Payments review for more information
Our original review of PowerPay is below.
Overview:
PowerPay has been in business since 2003. They have over 50,000 merchants that they process for, yet their complaint count on the BBB is still relatively low compared to their size.
They are the parent company for E-OnlineData which also has a great review on my site. I wouldn’t have any problems recommending you to either of these companies. Both are top notch.
PowerPay does not have a contract or cancellation (early-termination) fee. That’s always a plus.
They offer interchange-plus pricing, which I think should be the standard these days.
You can find them on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
PowerPay gets a 4.5 out of 5.
Parent/Partner Company:
PowerPay, LLC is the parent company of E-OnlineData.
Type:
Registered ISO/MSP.
Acquiring Bank(s) (Acquirer):
Deutsche Bank AG.
Payment Processor(s):
PowerPay is the processor.
Payment Gateway(s):
Authorize.Net.
Trust Symbols:
You can find the PowerPay BBB profile here. It has an “A+” rating as of this review, with 43 complaints in the last 36 months.
Negative Reviews:
They hardly have any negative reviews that I could find. Even on RipOffReport, the majority of complaints are directed towards a company called PowerPay America which is not the PowerPay that we are talking about here.
Common Complaints:
None.
Verifiable Testimonials/References:
None found. It’d be nice to see some good testimonials or case studies.
Security/Privacy:
Their online application is secured via VeriSign.
Customer Service:
I haven’t worked directly with PowerPay. This is where your personal experiences would be helpful. Let us know how your experience has been with PowerPay.
Contract Duration:
I was told that there is no contract duration term.
Cancellation Fee:
No cancellation fee either. Be sure to read your contract though.
Interchange-Plus Pricing:
Interchange-plus is offered by PowerPay.
Seasonal Downtime:
PowerPay doesn’t have a specific program for seasonal merchants. If you’re an eCommerce merchant that operates a seasonal business, you still have to pay for your payment gateway fee, so it would be best to just cancel your PowerPay account during your down months, then start back up when you’re processing again. Since they don’t have a cancellation fee, it won’t be too expensive for you to do so.
Product Offering:
Retail (Credit/Debit), eCommerce, Mail Order/Telephone Order (MOTO), Wireless, Check Processing, Gift Cards, Point-of-Sale (POS).
Specialty:
None.

Absolute WORTH company in the world to work with, HEFTY fees, HORRIBE customer service, Not Worth your time and money!
They are a bunch of crooks we’ve been in business 21 years have been using their company for over the past five years never had any chargebacks or claims of fraud. In the past month they’ve held over $35,000 worth of charges because supposedly they don’t feel comfortable with our company’s financial situation. I don’t understand how a this company expects our financial situation to improve when they withhold tens of thousands of dollars from us a month. Don’t go with this merchant provider, not if you expect to get paid in a timely fashion.
I can not even describe my frustration with this company. I used their processing service for about 6 months. They had told me at the start that they would have to hold 10% of my gross monthly income from my business because it was a high risk account. I agreed to that on the terms that they would review my account in 3 months and stop the 10% hold as long as I had a low charge back risk, which I did because they told me multiple times it was very low. I called to cancel my account in July and was told the full 10% would be deposited back into my account within 30 days, two different people told me this. After I didn’t hear from them, like both account reps had promised I would, I called and was told a completely different story about how the money would be released. I have tried contacting them about 10 times with voice mails and emails. This company has a total of $70,000 of mine even though I cancelled my account and told me today they would release about $5,000 a month. This is a complete joke of a company, I do not recommend doing business with them!
You have got to be kidding me. Are we talking about the same company???Powerpay (now re-branded as EVO because their service is terrible) is hands-down the worst vendor I have EVER worked with in any capacity, after 10+ years as a small business owner. Here’s a quick rundown of what you can expect as a Powerpay “customer”:(1) They couldn’t care less that you’re a small business. They will gouge you on price (75% above market on most CC transactions) and will come up with excuses to slow-roll you on payments.(2) They will come up with arbitrary conditions to work with you that are not listed anywhere in their (ridiculously long and obtuse) contract. Do you accept foreign (non-US) customers? Not with Powerpay, you won’t? Want to offer a free trial for a product? Sorry, you’re out of luck. Of course they won’t tell you these things when you first start working with them.(3) They will refuse to transfer credit card data to another payment processor when you finally fire them for sucking so badly (which we ultimately did). So you’ll have to keep working with these jokers if you have any recurring payments set up, or else contact those customers and convince them to rebook their payment.(4) Their list of hidden fees is truly mind-numbing. I counted nine fees on my last statement, giving new meaning to the term “nickel-and-diming you to death.”Do yourself a favor. Avoid these idiots like the plague and go with Braintree, or Stripe. Anyone but them.
After requesting that they close my account over 14 months ago, they have continued to take a discover card fee of 33.90 from my bank account monthly, and refuses to refund almost $475 (and I’ve NEVER taken a single Discover card payment). One of their reps – Shedaria – promised at least 2 months of the fees back, but have received nothing as of yet in terms of remuneration. I have complained to the BBB, which will hopefully help me sort this out.The last email to them:So, despite Faxing the company back on June 17, 2014 (which your reps have claimed was never received), AND the original rep saying that you could repay some, if not all of, the overcharge, you refuse? I will take this to public media – i.e. Facebook, Twitter, my personal community (memphis) and the BBB. I can’t say how upset I am about this ridiculous situation, that a large company would refuse such a small repayment for DOING NOTHING.I never processed any discover card payment in the 3 years I was using your company. The ongoing charge was why I changed to someone else in the first place.

Very dissatisfied with their service. We are stock with this merchant because they kept a reserve of 10% of what ever we charged. Originally we have been told that reserve will be removed after 6 months, but when we called after 6 months they said we will review your account and release the first month and we will keep 10% of the next month. Long story short. They will keep your money for 6 months. Do not be fooled with their low rates. We terminated our service with them today and they are still keeping the 10% for 6 months and they want to release it gradually.

If I could give a NO STAR review I would. My recent experience cost me over $364 in penalty fees with Power Pay and I never even got to use the service!!! I will NEVER recommend this company (actually I am now on a personal mission to share my poor experience with them with any person who will listen). “Frustrating” doesn’t even come close to my feelings in my dealings with them. WARNING: DO NOT GET INVOLVED WITH THIS COMPANY!!!!

Misty, I couldn’t agree with you more. They don’t deserve any stars.
I don’t know if this was a sponsored article or not. This company is literally the worst merchant provider I have dealt with. I don’t understand their BBB A+ standing where the customer reviews tab shows 94.7% negative feedback. I have never ever rated or commented for any service or product. But this is crucial – for any company out there considering Powerpay – keep that in mind they have horrible customer service, their statements are not clear (they don’t even show the reserve amount they’re keeping from you), their website was down and we had to get statements by email. The chargeback department seems to be run by a different company and they’re absolutely not helpful. They were holding very high reserve amounts from us and NOT A SINGLE PERSON from their risk prevention department is responsive. They think it’s okay to forget that they’re supposed to make settlements and since you’re busy you’ll forget about it.
We, too, are considering to move forward with lawsuit.
And dear writer, Amad, don’t be so quick at putting ratings and articles up with if you have no personal experience with the company. The reason why you have not seen good testimonials online is because there could be none.
