Great information, thank you for putting this up! I have a question about the Vend plans. It looks like the pricing on the website is quite a bit higher than what you have listed, and the free plan is gone. Can you confirm that? Is there any way to get a Starter plan now? We are looking for a way to try this out before going all-in. Thanks!

      Hi Jason,
Vend appears to still offer their “free for life” plan. Our understanding is that you’d have to sign up for the 14-day trial (this may have changed), and after that runs out you’d have an option to select the free plan. Check it out and let us know!

Fantastic review! Very thorough and well-organized. Thanks for the info!
Quick question- any idea why Vend does not have a smart tipping feature like Square? This feature is fantastic and appears to be fairly easy to implement (one would think). Seems like that would be an easy way for Vend to quickly improve its offering. I must be missing something… Again, awesome article!

          Hi ScottG,

Vend actually does accept tipping through credit card payments and through Apple Pay! This is a newer feature made available to Vend merchants, so definitely check it out!

Thanks for your review. Vend is currently offering Vend Ipad POS with Square or Pay Pal Here for credit card processing. What is your opinion?

That’s a good question! There’s a lot to consider here.

Honestly, as far as account stability goes, I think Square and PayPal are about the same. PayPal definitely seems more generous in working with merchants who run into account trouble from what I have seen of BBB complaints.

Rate wise, PayPal is /marginally/ cheaper (2.7% vs 2.75%) but not significantly so. Not enough that I think it makes a major difference.

Having used both, I definitely prefer the Miura M010 reader that PayPal uses over Square’s Contactless + Chip reader. (Square does also offer the Miura M010, though.) I think if you have a dock, it probably won’t make too much difference, but when you’re mobile, the Miura feels better in your hand. This matters because you’ll be using whatever hardware your processor offers with Vend.

Also, if you think you might, at some point, take advantage of any of the other features Square or PayPal provide in addition to processing through Vend, I will say that Square outmatches PayPal in sheer value. The overall features you get access to at no extra charge with Square is pretty astounding, and it’s why Square is our top-rated mobile provider. PayPal doesn’t measure up in that department. But it still has solid eCommerce features and a very good mPOS app — second only to Square, to me.

So, the short version: If you’re only concerned about processing payments through Vend, I think you’re going to do well either way. If hardware is a factor, definitely get the Miura M010 if you can. If you’re looking more broadly at what each system can do in addition to linking with Vend, it mostly depends on what you think is most important. If that’s the case, I recommend checking out our Square vs. Paypal Here article for more on that: https://www.merchantmaverick.com/square-vs-paypal/

                Hope that helps!
