What Is Payment Nerds?
Based in Nashville, Tennessee, Payment Nerds offers merchant accounts and payment gateways for all types of businesses, including low-risk, medium-risk, and high-risk businesses. Payment Nerds provides merchant services for businesses at any stage of growth, from startups that need basic processing services to enterprises requiring custom payment solutions.
Like many merchant services companies, Payment Nerds is not a direct processor, but rather, they connect businesses with banks and other backend processors while also providing the merchant services infrastructure, such as software integration, and customer service.
Payment Nerds was founded by Shawn Silver of PaymentCloud, one of our favorite high-risk merchant account providers.

High-Risk Payment Processing
Payment Nerds has expertise in supporting high-risk businesses and the unique challenges they face when it comes to securing a merchant account and avoiding chargebacks and fraud. Some high-risk industries Payment Nerds specializes in include:
- CBD & Hemp
- Adult Entertainment
- Travel & Ticketing
- Dating Sites
- Debt Collection
- Nutraceuticals
- Crypto Trading
- Firearms & Ammo
PN also states that “most credit scores” are accepted, which indicates that they can offer merchant accounts for businesses with bad credit.
Low- & Medium-Risk Payment Processing
Payment Nerds also provides accounts for low- and medium-risk businesses. Though oftentimes we do not recommend that lower-risk businesses apply with high-risk processors, in the case of Payment Nerds, low- and medium-risk businesses can secure very competitive credit card processing fees.
Some low-and medium-risk industries Payment Nerds specializes in include the following:
Low-Risk
- Retail
- Bars & Restaurants
- Professional Services
- Education
- Healthcare
- Clothing & Apparel
- Home Goods
- Real Estate Services
- Manufacturing
Medium-Risk
- Subscription Services
- Electronics
- Auto Parts
- Online Gaming
- Digital Marketing
- Health & Wellness
- Beauty Products
- E-learning
Multi-Channel Payments
Payment Nerds offers support for in-person transactions at brick-and-mortar business premises via a credit card terminal or POS system. The company also facilitates eCommerce and mobile sales, uniting all of your sales channels across the same platform.
For eCommerce, Payment Nerds integrates with numerous third-party payment gateways and shopping carts while also providing hosted payment pages with customizable checkouts.
Payment Nerds will also set you up with a virtual terminal to manually key in card payments you take over the phone. You will additionally be able to generate payment links to send to customers in an invoice, with recurring billing available for subscription-based businesses.
The company doesn’t have its own mobile POS, but it integrates with third-party mobile POS systems and offers a mobile dashboard where you can track your sales across all of your channels.
Multi-Currency Processing
Though Payment Nerds only offers merchant services to US- and Canada-based businesses, the company allows merchants to accept international payments and includes automatic currency conversion to facilitate these payments.
ACH & eCheck Payments
Payment Nerds allows businesses to accept bank-to-bank transfers via ACH payment and eCheck. This type of processing carries lower fees than credit card processing, making it ideal for larger, higher-volume sales, such as subscriptions.
Integrations
Payment Nerds integrates with all the standard business software systems you would expect and can even connect with other all-in-one payment service providers such as Square and Toast.
Some integrations Payment Nerds touts on its website include the following:
- Subscription Billing: Chargebee
- Accounting: QuickBooks, Freshbooks
- Shopping Carts: Shopify, Magento, Ecwid, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, OpenCart, and more
- Content Management Systems: WordPress
- POS Systems/Payment Gateways: Square, Clover, Toast (Payment Nerds notes that Toast has more restrictive compatibility)
Security Features
Like most merchant service providers, Payment Nerds offers PCI-compliant systems, with encryption, tokenization, and various fraud-detection features.
Fees & Rates
Payment Nerds earns high marks from us in the area of fees and rates, thanks to its transparent, flat-rate pricing, no monthly fee, and promise of no hidden fees.
With that being said, Payment Nerds does not disclose every fee you might incur.
Pricing Overview
Item | Value | Pricing Starts At | $0/month |
Account Setup Fee | $0 |
Contract Length | Month-to-month |
Processing Model | Flat-rate |
Card-present Transaction Fee | 1.59-2.59% + $0.03 |
eCommerce Transaction Fee | 1.59-2.59% + $0.03 |
Keyed-in Transaction Fee | 2.09-3.09% + $0.03 |
Equipment Cost | $0+ |
Your transaction fee will vary depending on your company’s risk profile (see “Monthly Plans” below).
Note that the above transaction fee ranges apply to domestic US cards only. A company rep confirmed that eCommerce transactions are charged at the same rate as in-person transactions, as long as the eCommerce sale is US-based (find international card processing fees in “Extra Costs” section below).
Payment Nerds will set you up with a free terminal, but they will also allow you to purchase your hardware outright—which is what we recommend doing, as “free” terminals almost always come with a long-term lease or service contract.
Monthly Plans
Payment Nerds Plans |
Price |
When To Use |
Low-Risk |
$0/month (1.59% + $0.03 transaction fee) |
For low-risk businesses. This category includes businesses with stable revenue and lower chargeback rates --- e.g., retail, professional services, manufacturing. |
Medium-Risk |
$0/month (2.49% + $0.03 transaction fee) |
For medium-risk businesses. This category includes businesses moderate chargeback rates or operate in sectors with some regulatory complexities --- e.g., auto parts, beauty products, subscription services. |
High-Risk |
$0/month (2.99% + $0.03 transaction fee) |
For high-risk businesses. This includes businesses with elevated chargeback risks and regulatory hurdles --- e.g., crypto traders, debt collectors, adult entertainers. |
Startups |
$0/month (2.7% + $0.03 transaction fee) |
For startup businesses. This includes newer businesses that don't have a lengthy track record to show revenue history, and businesses applying for first-time merchant accounts. |
Payment Nerds does not charge a monthly fee for processing services, but instead charges certain business types higher transaction fees. It’s not clear from the information provided on the website whether add-ons such as tableside payments for restaurants incur an additional monthly fee, but this seems likely.
Notably, Payment Nerds discloses its transaction fees for high-risk merchants, which is something the vast majority of high-risk processors do not do.
The transaction fees Payment Nerds charges for low-risk businesses are an especially good deal, while the fees for startups are a little on the high side (though not exorbitantly so).
Payment Nerds also offers cash-discount and credit card surcharge plans, though the website doesn’t provide pricing specifics for those plans.
Extra Costs
Certain fees, such as ACH transaction fees, are not disclosed on the company’s website. Neither are POS hardware and software fees disclosed.
Payment Nerds does not charge a setup fee, annual fee, or PCI compliance fee.
Sales & Advertising Transparency
Though Payment Nerds discloses its transaction fees on its website, a little more transparency regarding other fees and offerings would be welcomed.
The website offers more vague generalities than specifics, giving the feeling of slick marketing fluff, even though the word “transparent” is used a lot.
It would be nice, for example, to see which terminal models or payment gateways are supported, or to know whether accepting one of Payment Nerds’ free terminals obligates you to use their processing services for a certain length of time.
To be fair, though, Payment Nerds seems like it can accommodate a vast range of processing needs, integrations, and risk profiles, which could make it difficult to quote specific prices, especially if many of their customers need large-scale, customized solutions.
Contract Length & Early Termination Fee
Payment Nerds offers month-to-month contracts with no early termination fee as standard. This is an excellent policy, especially in the high-risk space. However, as mentioned, the company does offer a “free” terminal for new merchants, which typically means you will be on the hook for a long-term contract if you accept the equipment.
A company rep did confirm that they offer terminal leases and that the terminal lease contract length varies. We recommend you avoid leasing a payment terminal under any circumstances (from any merchant services provider, not just Payment Nerds) and opt to purchase your equipment outright or source it yourself.
Customer Service & Technical Support
According to merchant testimonials, as well as our experience with the company, Payment Nerds’ customer support agents are courteous, knowledgeable, and able to resolve problems quickly.
Payment Nerds provides phone and email support during business hours, but 24-hour support for technical issues is available via whichever bank and/or gateway provider PN sets you up with. Payment Nerds does not have a live chat function.
One area where Payment Nerds is lacking is self-help resources. There is no knowledgebase and only one video on their YouTube channel, which provides a brief overview of their services.
We appreciate that the company sets all of its merchants up with a dedicated account manager to whom they can turn if/when problems arise.
Here’s a breakdown of which customer service channels Payment Nerds offers:
User Reviews
Payment Nerds seems to be a very new company (all their social media accounts were created in 2024), and thus, there aren’t any user reviews posted about the company online. There is no BBB profile, TrustPilot profile, or Facebook reviews., etc. However, there are some positive testimonials posted on Payment Nerds’ website, as well as positive professional reviews posted on a few independent websites.
With the company being so new, it’s hard to score Payment Nerds accurately in this area. We’ll continue to update this review, and hopefully, as time goes on, we’ll start to see some user reviews come through user review websites like GetApp, G2, and the like.
Negative Reviews & Complaints
There are a few reviews of Payment Nerds written by professional reviewers on the websites Sonary, Top Merchant Services, and Top Payment Processing.
All of these reviews are mostly positive in nature, though a few shortcomings are pointed out—specifically the company’s lack of live chat and its high processing rates for startups.
Positive Reviews & Testimonials
The company does have a few testimonials posted on the “About” page of its website (ideally, I like to find at least a few user reviews posted on another site, but in this case, there just aren’t any).
The merchants who gave testimonials for Payment Nerds praise the high quality of its customer service agents and these agents’ ability to quickly resolve their problems.
The company also seems to have a fast approval process. One of these merchants who gave a testimonial said that they were able to start processing the same day they applied.
Final Verdict
Payment Nerds offers a centralized, all-in-one payment processing platform with helpful agents who are able to get accounts up and running quickly. They offer competitive rates and terms to low-and high-risk businesses alike. According to the company’s website, 98 percent of the merchants who apply are approved. Though small, low-risk businesses are eligible, Payment Nerds seems to cater mostly to larger businesses and high-risk businesses especially.
Payment Nerds’ marketing copy is a bit vague at times, and the company is quite new, so it’s hard to form a super accurate assessment of the company just yet. They also offer terminal leases, which can be a red flag, but the fact that they let you purchase and even source your equipment yourself is a bright green flag. The fact that the company shares a founder with PaymentCloud is another big positive in our book.
Overall, from our limited experience with the company, as well as the information we were able to dig up about them online, Payment Nerds appears to be a high-quality provider of merchant services. Time will tell if they will make our list of the best credit card processing companies for small businesses, but if I ran a high-risk business, I would look into their merchant services. There are a lot of shady players in the high-risk space, and if PN can really offer high-risk businesses month-to-month contracts with flat-rate pricing, that sounds like a pretty amazing deal.
Still, before signing on the dotted line with Payment Nerds (or any merchant services provider), be sure to do your due diligence. This means reviewing your merchant agreement carefully to make sure you are truly getting a competitive rate and a month-to-month contract.
And please also be aware that accepting a free terminal or a terminal lease may obligate you to a longer-term contract.
