First of all, there’s a very important question we have to address: What constitutes a mobile POS (or mPOS) anyway? As with a lot of industry-related terms, you’ll see some differing interpretations. I’m a bit of a purist in that I believe a true mobile POS is one that operates on a smartphone or tablet. But I was challenged to expand my views a little bit. The mPOS systems you’ll find on this list all fit the following criteria:

  • They must function on some sort of tablet or handheld device (iPad, Android, or proprietary hardware), but preferably also a smartphone (iOS, Android, or both)
  • They must be cloud-based, meaning all information is backed up and stored online automatically, rather than requiring any sort of local networking

Whether you’re choosing your first POS or looking to switch from a different portable POS system that isn’t working for your small business, it doesn’t matter. We’ve put together a list of the best mobile POS solutions out there at various price points. These wireless POS systems will work as countertop systems, traveling POS systems for events, and solutions you can use to add mobility to your brick-and-mortar retail or restaurant business — for example, with line-busting, floor-selling, tableside payments, and more.

1. Square

Cons

With a suite of features that work just as well for retailers as they do for quick-serve restaurants and cafes, it’s no surprise that Square makes our list. Square has a major presence with quick-serve businesses and cafes, but it’s also common among retailers and mobile service businesses thanks to its versatility. Plus, a free online store and shopping cart integrations open up the possibility of selling online.

Square has no monthly fee and a flat-rate processing rate of 2.6% + $0.10 per transaction. Square processing is a good deal for low-volume, low-risk businesses. Higher-volume or higher-risk businesses will be better off choosing a different wireless POS system they can use with their own merchant account.

All you need to start processing with Square is a phone (Android or iPhone), tablet, or laptop, and a Square credit card reader. While Square’s free magstripe card reader is an option, I would recommend purchasing Square’s EMV/NFC reader, which, at $49, is a small price to pay for the ability to accept chip cards and contactless payments. If you need something sturdier than just the mobile credit card processing app and reader, you might consider using Square’s proprietary hardware: the $299 Square Terminal or the $799 Square Register. If you’re deciding between the two, Square Terminal is better if you need a handheld mobile reader you can walk around with. In contrast, Square Register has more features, including a customer-facing display, but needs to stay plugged in.

Vend is an excellent and easy-to-use web-based retail POS for iPad. You can also run the POS from a web browser on a desktop computer. Vend has some useful features, such as built-in loyalty, inventory management, employee management, and customer management. Plus, it has an intuitive iPad register that makes it easy to customize quick keys, put items on layaway, accept gift cards, and connect a sale with a customer’s loyalty account. Vend also has a mobile barcode scanner app that lets you turn your iPhone or Android smartphone into a barcode scanner.

Vend’s monthly pricing starts at $99/month, which is not inexpensive but does include loyalty. You can also get almost every advanced feature under the $129/month “Pro” plan (including gift cards, advanced reporting, promotions, QuickBooks integration, and more), which is quite reasonable. Vend has a limited free plan as well. The free plan only includes 10 active products, but if you have a casual business that just sells a few items, it could work for you.

Vend does not provide built-in eCommerce, but the POS works with third-party eComm providers (such as Shopify and WooCommerce). However, Vend probably wouldn’t be my first choice if I planned to do a lot of online selling. Vend also doesn’t do payment processing in-house but instead partners with various payment processing providers, including PayPal, Square, WorldpayEVO PaymentsNorth American Bancard, and CardConnect.

3. Clover

Clover has several mobile Android-based and purpose-built POS hardware solutions to choose from: Clover Mini, Clover Flex, and Clover Go. The iPad mini-sized Clover Mini is the most fully-featured Clover POS solution, apart from the larger hardwired Clover Station. Clover’s customizable plug-and-play POS is favored by quick-serve and small retail businesses. However, it can also support full-size restaurants and service-based businesses as well as eCommerce. The mobility of the $749 Clover Mini makes it easy to line-bust, sell on the floor, or even outside the bounds of your brick-and-mortar store with a data plan. It also syncs up with your other Clover hardware.

Note that Clover Go is the closest in scope to Square if you want a mobile reader that syncs up with your cell phone, while Clover Flex is a smart terminal akin to Poynt. However, neither of these mobile POS solutions are very suitable as a standalone mPOS if you don’t already use Clover Station or Mini. With its built-in receipt printer, barcode scanner, and swipe/EMV/NFC reader, the Mini can be used by itself or with a cash drawer using Wi-Fi, ethernet, or LTE.

Clover plans are sold with a First Data (now Fiserv) merchant account and cannot be reprogramed to use with a different payment processor. Your Clover pricing and quality of merchant services largely depend on which Clover seller you choose; make sure to either buy from Clover directly or from a recommended Clover seller. If you buy directly from Clover, plans start at $9.95/month per point of sale device for the Register Lite plan, which offers in-person processing at 2.7% + $0.10. Most businesses, especially those processing more than $10,000/month, will choose the more fully-featured Register plan, which, at $39.95/month, comes with a lot more functionality and 2.3% + $0.10 in-person processing. Clover also has dedicated plans for counter-service and full-service restaurants. Plus, you can add to Clover’s feature-set to make it do just about whatever you want simply by purchasing apps from Clover’s extensive and varied app store.

4. ShopKeep

ShopKeep is an iPad POS app that offers features for quick-serve businesses, such as cafes, food trucks, and bars, right alongside its retail capabilities. Besides mobility, ShopKeep also offers advanced back-end features, such as raw ingredient inventory management for restaurants, matrix inventory for retail sales, and a time clock for employee management. In addition to iPads, ShopKeep runs on Clover POS hardware, including the handheld Clover Flex and Poynt Smart Terminals.

The paid software packages start at $49/month, making them competitively priced, and ShopKeep even offers a limited free plan.

Though you can’t run the full POS on a smartphone, you can monitor your store when you’re away using the mobile Shopkeep Pocket app. The app also includes a virtual terminal through which you can process online credit card payments with your phone on the go, provided that you’re on a paid package. And with an iPad and credit card reader (or a wireless smart terminal such as Clover Flex), ShopKeep merchants can accept swiped, dipped, or tapped credit cards anywhere, including with a 4G signal or offline. In-house flat-rate payment processing is offered at 2.5% + $0.10, but ShopKeep is also compatible with some outside processors — call the company to see if yours is supported.

Lightspeed Retail’s iPad app offers a myriad of features. These include integrated eCommerce, advanced reporting, store credit, inventory management, the ability to buy items in bulk and resell them individually, purchase orders, employee management, CRM, reporting, and multistore capability (some of these features are paid add-ons). By using an iPad with Lightspeed installed, your employees can take payments from the sales floor, show customers product images and descriptions, and cut waiting times. With a monthly fee starting at $69, Lightspeed is easily the most advanced retail POS app on our list but also one of the more expensive ones. It can also be used with a desktop computer setup using a web browser.

Lightspeed Retail also offers its in-house Lightspeed Payments processing service (available for US customers only), which takes payments with EMV/NFC-capable terminals (such as Verifone MX915) at a rate of 2.6% + $0.10. Note, this rate is the same as Square’s but not as low as other POS solutions, such as ShopKeep and Clover, and not a great deal for higher-volume retail stores. Fortunately, Lightspeed also integrates with multiple other payment processors, including WorldPay, Cayan, iZettle, Tyro, Worldline, and others.

The company also has a separate iPad POS for restaurants: Lightspeed Restaurant.

6. Toast

Toast is an Android-based, mobile, all-in-one POS app custom-built for restaurants and bars. Toast’s core software includes cloud-based reporting, menu management, and a kitchen display system. Toast has many COVID-friendly digital ordering and payment features, including online ordering, contactless delivery, eGift card support, and QR code payments that let restaurant customers pay for their meals with their phones. You can even purchase Toast’s digital ordering suite without needing to buy any hardware or the POS.

Toast is highly mobile, offering a custom-built handheld point of sale device called “Toast Go” that servers can use to take orders and payments from the floor. For terminals, kiosks, and guest-facing displays, Toast employs commercial-grade Elo I-Series touchscreens with various form factors. Restauranteurs also really like the kitchen display system, which eliminates the need for paper tickets, speeding up and simplifying operations. Yes, you will have to invest in all the hardware needed to run your Toast system (you can purchase pre-configured hardware bundles from Toast’s website; the company recommends against purchasing hardware on your own). A starting price of $69/month is very reasonable, though, for all the functionality this tech-forward restaurant POS provides.

Toast has in-house payment processing (call for quote); the POS is not compatible without outside payment processors. Keep in mind that to use Toast, you will need to sign a multiyear processing agreement with an early termination fee (ETF).

7. Shopify

Shopify started as an eCommerce software provider, but it’s moved into the realm of an all-in-one provider thanks to its integrated payments service and a surprisingly robust POS. One of the big draws with Shopify POS is how easily you can upgrade and scale as your business grows. Shopify is also versatile in that you can use it on any mobile device or laptop, and it has a variety of pricing plans to choose from. Its entry-level service plan, Shopify Lite, comes at a very low monthly fee of $9/month and provides access to the POS system as well as invoicing and limited online selling tools — embeddable buy buttons to sell on your existing blog or website (supports WordPress, Squarespace, Wix, Weebly, Tumblr, and more).

If you sell mostly online and are just testing the waters for in-person sales (e.g., at events), Shopify can be a great starter option that’s a little more robust than free software. Alternatively, Shopify Lite can also be a good retail POS if you already have a brick-and-mortar store and want to test the waters with eCommerce or if you use the countertop Shopify POS solution (on iPad or Android) and also want a portable POS system to take on the road.

The processing fee for Shopify Lite is 2.7%. If you upgrade to a larger package (which has more features) later on, you can get lower fees.

Looking For One Of These Mobile Point Of Sale Systems?

These vendors didn’t quite make our cut, but they may work for certain types of businesses.

PayPal Here

With PayPal Here, you’ll pay a straightforward 2.7% per in-person transaction, which you’ll process with a chip and swipe reader (free on signup) or a $79 chip and tap reader. With no monthly fee and flat-rate pricing, it’s suitable for low-volume businesses and cheaper than Square, but it doesn’t provide the POS features Square or Shopify offer, such as a virtual terminal. If you want a more fully-featured POS that uses PayPal payment processing, Vend, discussed above, is an option for retail, while PayPal integrates with TouchBistro, Lavu, and talech for restaurants. PayPal Here can be a good complement to any of those systems for occasional mobile sales, but it is not really a suitable standalone POS.

eHopper

eHopper is a basic, free POS system that may appeal to certain business types, such as convenience stores and small grocery stores. You can use eHopper on an iPad, Windows tablet, Android tablet, PC, or Poynt Smart Terminal to accept cash, credit, debit cards, and EBT. In addition to its free monthly cost, an eHopper account also includes a free terminal. eHopper also offers credit surcharge no-fee credit card processing, which allows you to pass on your credit card fees to your customers (if that practice is legal in your state). With its free plan, free Pax S300 terminal (for new customers), and even free credit card processing, eHopper is worth checking out if you want a free POS. However, it is not the only free POS system. For example, Square is free, and though you will pay for credit card processing, Square has more features and doesn’t require you to pass along your processing costs to your customers.

6 Ways Small Businesses Can Use An mPOS To Their Advantage

Mobile POS systems offer a plethora of advantages for small businesses. Even if your business has a traditional brick-and-mortar storefront (such as a restaurant or retail store), you can leverage mPOS to your advantage. Here are some innovative ways you can use mobile point of sale systems to take your business to the next level.

Accept Contactless Payments

Mobile POS systems generally allow you to take payments on a mobile device and accept payments from customers’ smartphones and smartwatches. Contactless payments (also called NFC payments, mobile payments, or mobile wallets) include options, such as Apple Pay, Google Pay (formerly Android Pay), and PayPal. Some POS systems also accept contactless QR code payments wherein the customer scans a code with their phone’s camera and pays from their device. Giving your customers contactless options to pay makes it that much quicker and easier for customers to buy from you. Especially during COVID-19, many customers prefer safer contactless payments.

Line Busting & Flexible Checkouts

Mobile devices can be used in tandem with traditional registers, or you can eliminate the registers if you’re that kind of trendy biz! You can use mobile checkouts to reduce lines — for example, a cafe server can work their way down the line at the counter with a handheld device on a busy morning. Or you can offer multiple low-key places to check out in a store. Many people prefer to do a self-checkout whenever possible, and that’s another option you have with mobile hardware. With mPOS, it’s all about options!

Sephora is an example of a company that uses mobile checkout options on an as-needed basis. The company gives its staff mobile devices, so the floor sales agents can check people out if there’s a very long line.

Pop-Up Shops, Tradeshows, & Sidewalk Sales

Many retail businesses can benefit from non-traditional sales opportunities at special events, such as craft fairs, festivals, or even a pop-up shop. Increasingly, retail businesses take advantage of these kinds of events to make direct sales, spread the word about their products, and generate social media buzz. Mobile POS lets you travel to other cities, bring inventory to conventions or tradeshows, or just join in the local sidewalk sale.

With mobile POS, if you can get an internet signal via your cell or mobile hot spot, it is often a lot cheaper than buying it for a wired terminal at a convention center. Some mobile POS systems even have an offline mode, letting you take credit card payments even when you don’t have an internet or data signal.

Food Trucks & Catering

Mobile POS lets you take your restaurant on the road! Food truck events are super popular, and you don’t want your restaurant to miss out on the chance to impress new customers with your cuisine. Even if your restaurant uses a full POS, you can use a mobile system in conjunction with your POS for events. You can also use mPOS to take payments on the go when you are catering an event.

Mobile POS systems offer features such as digital receipts and have a much smaller footprint than traditional POS registers, so they are ideal in cramped quarters.

Tableside Ordering For Customers

There are a couple of different ways in which mobile POS lets restaurants leverage tableside ordering. One way is with self-checkout tablets at tables that allow customers to order and make payments right from the table. Another is with mobile devices that your employees can carry, enabling the servers to digitally send orders to the kitchen and process customers’ payments from the floor. Tableside ordering technology saves time and reduces mistakes in orders because the POS prompts for details, such as dressings, toppings, sides, etc.

Accept Payments Wherever Your Client Is

Whether you’re in plumbing, pest control, lawn care, contracting, or another type of mobile business — i.e., a business that visits clients at home or primarily interacts with them on a worksite — mobile POS lets you take payments wherever your clients are. Instead of waiting on invoices, you can accept payment right on the spot. That makes things easier for your customers, as it’s typically much more convenient to hand someone your credit card than it is to hunt down your checkbook or enter your credit card number in an online payment portal. Onsite payments also reduce the number of late payments you’ll have to chase down later on.

6 Things To Consider When Choosing Your Point of Sale Devices

As follows are some very important things to consider and look for when shopping for a mobile POS system.

  • Cost: Some mobile point of sale systems have a monthly fee, and others do not. However, the cost of payment processing is also something to consider. Sometimes a program may be “free,” but once you factor in payment processing costs, it could actually be more expensive than a program that charges $65/month. The POS program’s features, such as inventory management, eCommerce, and others, should also be taken into account when considering the system’s value in relation to its cost.
  • Connectivity: It’s also important to consider how the device connects to the internet and processes payments. For example, many mobile POS systems need a Wi-Fi or data connection to function and process payments, but many do have an offline mode that allows you to continue taking payments in the absence of a connection. Other systems allow certain functions of the POS to operate offline but cannot accept payments. Depending on your particular selling needs, it may be important that your POS can continue working in places without Wi-Fi.
  • Payment Types: Not all POS software can support every type of payment. For example, a system with a very basic credit card reader may only accept swiped magstripe payments, and not even chip cards, let alone contactless payments (such as Apple Pay and Google Pay). If you want to accept gift cards, debit cards, PayPal, or online payments, you should also make sure your POS supports those payment types.
  • Loyalty: A mobile loyalty program is increasingly essential to running a successful small business. I strongly recommend choosing a system that includes loyalty or integrates with loyalty software so that customers can collect points for purchases and redeem them. Loyalty is very important for customer retention, and customers have grown to expect this benefit from other small businesses they frequent.
  • Integrations: If you use other small business software, your POS will ideally integrate with this software so that the programs can work together. For example, if you already use QuickBooks for accounting and Shopify for eComm, you will want to verify that the POS you’re considering will sync your sales with those programs. POS companies often charge an extra monthly fee for third-party software integrations so that’s something else to keep in mind.
  • Merchant Agreement: Most POS programs come with a payment processing agreement (merchant agreement). It’s essential to understand your contract’s terms, including for how long you are required to use the processor and any added fees they charge. While many cloud POS companies use month-to-month contracts that you can cancel at any time, many others require a multiyear contract that charges a hefty fee if you cancel before the term is over. Increasingly, web-based POS companies offer a monthly contract (which may or may not also include a merchant agreement), but to get the lowest price, you will have to commit for one year.

Is A Mobile POS System Right For You?

A mobile POS system is ideal for a business that doesn’t want sales to stop at the cash register and needs flexibility and mobility in how it takes payments. However, even if you take sales primarily or entirely from the counter, it can still be beneficial to use an mPOS. Software is increasingly subscription-and app-based, and this applies to POS software as well. Touchscreen, iPad, and tablet-based systems are the future of POS, not just due to their mobility or small footprint but also because of their advanced web-based features, scalability, ease of use, and compatibility with other popular business apps. Even if you don’t absolutely need mobility at this time, it’s important to think of the future and the flexibility of a lightweight, month-to-month system.

If you’re brand-new to mobile POS and mobility is the most important quality you’re looking for — particularly if you want to take payments on your smartphone — I’d recommend starting with Square. It’s free to use, and since there’s no commitment required, you can always move on to a more advanced POS later on if you find that Square can’t meet your needs.

                  Rock Chalk! I have a business in Kansas City building decks and need a payment system that will accept credit cards in the field. I am a one man shop, I do the marketing, accounting, sales and instillation. I need a mobile unit where I can take payment from customers that either swipes or inserts and has a back end that will integrate with Quickbooks. Should I just be using Quickbooks for all my field payments and if so how does that work.

                    Square would be a good fit for your situation and can even sync with QuickBooks, so I’d definitely suggest checking them out. Alternatively, you may also want to take a look at Intuit GoPayment. Both great options. Best of luck!

                        Your website indicates you are based out of Puerto Rico, which makes things a bit tricky. We don’t have a lot of info on mPOS in your area, but it does look like SumUp supports businesses there. I’d suggest checking them out to see if they look like a good fit for your business.
